It has been a big day away from the on-field action at Liverpool, with a huge update regarding investment in the club.
Invesment consortium close in on Liverpool deal
According to the Times‘ Paul Joyce, among others, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is closing in on a £1.4 billion deal to buy a significant minority stake in Liverpool as part of an investment consortium.
He reports that Reds owners FSG are “in talks to sell about one third” of the £4.5 billion-valued club, with the syndicate led by Amit Bhatia and including Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports say that the deal could even be agreed “as soon as this week,” in what would represent Bezos’ first investment in a major European football club.
It should be stressed that FSG will continue to be the controlling shareholders, still running Liverpool in the process.
The news may split opinion, with Bezos, the world’s third-richest person, not exactly a man of the people!

Danny Gallagher has given an honest assessment of likely Liverpool signing Araujo, highlighting the risks with him:
“The 27-year-old is a very spirited, heart-on-the-sleeve footballer. The sort of passion connoisseur who is loved at Anfield, if it’s tempered well and married with consistent performances.
“The latter element isn’t a guarantee, and all this goes without mentioning Araujo’s injury record which, could be better. Since early 2021 the big defender has been plagued by constant muscle concerns, reoccurring ankle issues and problems with his knee.
“Araujo is athletic and highly physical, sure, but the numerous red crosses scattered across his fitness history hint at a body that cannot always keep up with its owner’s demands on the battlefield.”

On this day in 1977, Kenny Dalglish joined Liverpool from Celtic for a then club-record fee of £440,000.
The legendary Scot was given the unenviable job of replacing Kevin Keegan, but he even usurped him, becoming arguably the greatest player in Reds history.
Dalglish ended up scoring 172 goals in his 515 appearances, and registering 171 assists for good measure.
He won six league titles and three European Cups as a player, then also excelled as manager, handling the Hillsborough disaster with great class.
There will never be another like King Kenny.
