Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is spreading some of his wealth, joining a consortium that will purchase roughly one-third of English Premier League club Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group.

Leading the bid alongside Bezos is Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and a former shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers, according toSky News. Former Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is reportedly also joining in on the high-powered bid.

Saverin is no slouch either. His wealth comes largely from his stake in Meta, and he is worth an estimated $33 billion.

Bhatia is married to Vanisha Mittal, daughter of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, whose net worth is around $31 billion according to Forbes.

Boston Red Sox owner Fenway Sports Group purchased Liverpool in 2010 for $405 million US. The one-third stake for the soccer team could be worth $6 billion U.S.

The deal would put Bezos, Bhatia and Saverin, three of the world’s wealthiest people, in the ownership box at Liverpool, one of English football’s most storied clubs.

According to Forbes, Bezos’ fortune is estimated at around $280 billion US., while Saverin is said to be worth over $32 billion.

This isn’t Bezos’ first attempt to purchase a sports team. In 2022-23, he explored a bid for the NFL’s Washington Commanders, but ultimately never submitted an offer.

Since buying Liverpool in 2010 when the club was in serious financial trouble, Fenway Sports Group has overseen a remarkable turnaround.

Liverpool has won two Premier League titles (2019-20, 2024-25), one Champions League (2018-19), and one FA Cup (2021-22).

Off the field, FSG has operated as a fiscally responsible owner, rather than spending huge amounts on transfers, which has frustrated some supporters at times.

Sky News reports that an announcement about the deal could be expected in the coming days.
