Liverpool officially sign Ronald Araujo

There is a particular kind of silence that falls over a transfer once the reporting stops and the club takes over.

For several days Liverpool supporters had lived off verbal agreements, sporting director sign-offs and the word of trusted reporters, all of it pointing one way without anybody at Anfield saying a thing.

That silence has now ended.

Liverpool have officially signed Ronald Araujo on a season long loan from Barcelona, with an option to buy written into the agreement.

“I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy,” 27-year-old Araujo, who will wear No.33, told Liverpoolfc.com. “I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history.

“I’m excited to meet my teammates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated and really up for getting going. I think it was the ideal move for me at this stage in my career. I think it was a move that was necessary for me to take.

“As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly. As I say, I’m super-happy to be here and excited to get started. I’m glad about the interest and it was the right move at the right time.”

The need was severe enough that the deal barely required justification.

Ibrahima Konate left for Real Madrid on a free transfer, Joe Gomez picked up a muscle injury in the opening friendly, Giovanni Leoni is still working back from an ACL tear and Jeremy Jacquet, the 21 year old signed from Rennes, has not featured in a warm up fixture after shoulder surgery ended his last campaign early.

Virgil van Dijk was, until now, the only fully fit senior centre back on the books.

Araujo arrives as one of the more decorated defenders to walk through the door in recent years.

He joined Barcelona in 2018, went on to make more than 200 appearances for the club, collected three La Liga titles in the past four seasons and finished last season wearing the captain’s armband.

His contract at Barcelona runs until 2031, which underlines that this is a loan of convenience for both parties rather than a player being moved on cheaply.

What tipped him towards Merseyside was minutes.

Araujo made only 11 league starts last season as Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin became the preferred central pairing, and at 27 he is not at a stage of his career where a watching brief holds much appeal.

For Iraola, the fit is straightforward.

Ronald Araujo has the recovery pace to protect a high defensive line, wins a heavy share of his aerial duels and is comfortable enough at right back to be shifted wide against an elite winger.

Alongside Van Dijk, that aggression complements rather than duplicates.

Attention now turns to when he is available.

If the season goes the way both club and player hope, the option sitting in that contract will become the most important clause of the summer.

Welcome, Ronald 👋
