It is obviously not where Chelsea want to be, but the Blues will be playing in the second round of the Carabao Cup this year.

Xabi Alonso’s side have been drawn against Luton Town and are starting at this stage of the competition after failing to qualify for Europe last season.

With Chelsea playing Fulham a few days prior to their visit to Kenilworth Road, Alonso is likely to rotate his team. And if he does, Luton will be delighted, as they will not want to face Cole Palmer again.

Palmer put in one of his best-ever performances for Chelsea against Luton back in the 2023/24 season when they were still in the Premier League.

On the day, the attacking midfielder scored two goals and also set up Noni Madueke.

According to Sofascore, Palmer took five shots in total and registered two key passes. Three of his shots were on target, so he was a real threat.

Palmer also completed both of the dribbles he attempted. Simply put, the 24-year-old was unstoppable that afternoon.

Fortunately for Jack Wilshere, Palmer is unlikely to start. But if the England international is in the matchday squad and Chelsea need a goal, do not be surprised to see Alonso turn to him and be rewarded for it.
