There's no question that the Atlanta Falcons' backfield belongs to Bijan Robinson. While he's in line for what could be his biggest season, the front office did manage to add some depth to the running back room in the middle of training camp.
Reports indicate that former San Francisco 49ers ball carrier Trey Sermon is joining Atlanta as a free agent signing, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Sermon will compete for a backup role for the Falcons.
“Falcons signed veteran free-agent running back Trey Sermon,” Schefter reported.
Sermon will compete for playing time with Brian Robinson, Tyler Goodson, Nathan Carter, and undrafted free agent Cash Jones. The Falcons may be looking for someone to split some carries with Bijan Robinson this coming season, as the club lost Allgeier in free agency to the Arizona Cardinals.
Trey Sermon has not played for the 49ers since the 2021-22 campaign, where he appeared in nine games with the club (two starts). If he plays any games for the Falcons, this will be Sermon's fifth team in six years in the NFL. The last organization he was with was the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, wher ehe appeared in four games, but did not recieve a single rush attempt or target.
The former third-round pick just hasn't quite found his footing in the league. In his first five seasons in professional football, Sermon has recorded 505 rushing yards and three touchdowns in 46 games played (five starts).
All things considered, Falcons fans will expect to see Bijan Robinson dominate the backfield. Especially after the Bijan Robinson signed a three-year, $66.75 million contract extension in August. The 24-year-old running back has accumulated 3,910 rushing yards1,738 receiving yards, and 34 total touchdowns (25 rushing, 9 receiving) through three seasons in the NFL.
