Filip Jorgensen Chelsea Loan: Chelsea have agreed a season-long move that will send Filip Jorgensen to Strasbourg for 2026/27, giving the £21m goalkeeper a fresh chance to play regularly. GIVEMESPORT journalists Ben Jacobs and Matt Smith first reported the agreement, with Fabrizio Romano subsequently confirming the move as a straight loan without a purchase option.
Jorgensen left Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Australia to complete the switch. That decision made sense. He had struggled to establish himself as the club’s regular starter after arriving from Villarreal in 2024, while Robert Sanchez and Mike Penders now sit ahead of him in Chelsea’s goalkeeping plans.
L’Équipe reported that Jorgensen started only 12 matches across competitions last season. Chelsea therefore faced a simple choice: keep a 24-year-old goalkeeper competing for limited minutes or send him somewhere he can actually play.
For Jorgensen, Strasbourg offers precisely what Stamford Bridge couldn’t provide. He needs a sustained run of matches, proper responsibility and the chance to recover confidence after a frustrating spell in west London.
Strasbourg need a first-choice goalkeeper too. Mike Penders returned to Chelsea after his loan spell, leaving the French club searching for another option. Romano confirmed that Strasbourg will take Jorgensen, while earlier reports had identified the club as his leading destination.
There is another reason this deal looks logical. Chelsea and Strasbourg share the BlueCo ownership structure, and players have already travelled between the clubs. That arrangement makes Strasbourg a natural destination for Chelsea players who need senior football.
Chelsea had considered Diogo Costa, but no official offer materialised. So this isn’t really about replacing Jorgensen with another goalkeeper. It’s about clearing the queue.

Xabi Alonso inherits a huge squad, and trimming unnecessary competition should help him establish clear roles. Jorgensen sitting behind Sanchez and Penders would have offered little value.
Luis Garcia, the JDT chief executive and former Liverpool player, backed Alonso after Chelsea’s 3-3 friendly draw with Johor Darul Ta’zim. Garcia praised the authority Alonso received over recruitment and believes he can impose the same footballing identity that brought success at Bayer Leverkusen.

That gives Alonso another squad decision solved before the serious work begins. For Chelsea, the £21m investment hasn’t delivered the expected return so far. Yet a productive Ligue 1 season could change the conversation. Jorgensen gets matches, Strasbourg get their goalkeeper, and Chelsea get another chance to assess an asset they haven’t given enough first-team football. That is probably the point.
