Liverpool now have chance to fix right-back crisis and sign 'one of Premier League's best…

Liverpool have struggled to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold since he left for Real Madrid last summer and the right-back position remains up for grabs.

Jeremie Frimpong joined the Reds from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, but the Dutchman is more of a winger than a full-back. He had been rotating with Conor Bradley last season until the Northern Irishman sustained a serious knee injury, which he isn't expected to recover from until November.

A new right-back had been on the cards when the summer transfer window opened, but new manager Andoni Iraola hasn't been handed one. Instead, his transfer chiefs have focused on bolstering his wing options along with central defence amid the arrivals of Spanish winger Victor Munoz and Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo on loan.

Bradley Barcola remains Liverpool's top priority with just over a week left until the new Premier League campaign starts. While they continue to pursue the Paris Saint-Germain attacker, they should be on high alert and watching developments at Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace are closing in on the signing of Israeli wing-back Anan Khalaili after agreeing on a £21 million deal with Union Saint-Gilloise. The youngster's arrival has cast doubts over Daniel Munoz's future with the South London outfit.

Munoz has been one of Palace's standout performers ever since joining the UEFA Conference League winners in January 2024. He has been a mainstay in the Eagles' team, becoming one of the most highly-rated right wing-backs in Europe.

There is now talk of Munoz leaving Selhurst Park and Anfield feels the ideal destination for the Colombian. Liverpool have been interested in the past and were believed to have been weighing up a move for the 30-year-old back in December.

Munoz's profile could be perfect for Iraola's system and he's just as effective going forward as he is defensively. That's why Opta Analyst Ryan Benson believes he's among the best right-sided defenders in the top flight, writing for the Premier League's official website:

Munoz only has two years left on his contract, which could mean he is available for a reasonable price. With Iraola clearly needing a more defensively sound right-back, he ticks all the boxes.

Munoz Experience Could be Crucial

A potential deal for Barcola is expected to cost over £100m, and that will take a large chunk out of Liverpool's transfer budget. The PSG winger appears keen on a move to Anfield, and the Reds are desperately trying to sign a marquee attacker following Mohamed Salah's departure.

The depth of Iraola's squad does raise alarm bells, especially in defence, after losing Andy Robertson's experience. Jeremy Jacquet has replaced Ibrahima Konate, but he's still young and will need time to grow.

That's why signing an experienced defender could be crucial to help ensure Iraola isn't relying on youth too much. Munoz has proven his worth throughout his time at Palace and if the Merseysiders want a reliable full-back for a relatively cheap fee, he's the one turn to.
