The Green Bay Packers face intense competition in their secondary, and Javon Bullard believes that pressure benefits everyone involved. The Packers’ cornerback competition remains one of the most watched contests of training camp.

Bullard enters his third NFL season as an established member of Green Bay’s secondary after emerging as the starting nickel defender last year. The Packers have continued expanding his responsibilities within new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s defensive system.

The Packers still face perimeter uncertainty. Keisean Nixon leads the group, while Carrington Valentine, Brandon Cisse, and Benjamin St-Juste have received opportunities opposite him.

Bullard missed Monday’s practice after sustaining a bone bruise in his right foot Sunday. He wore a walking boot as a precaution, and Kitan Oladapo replaced him in the slot with the first-team defense.

WFRV Local 5’s Carson Fowler shared a clip Monday on X, formerly Twitter, featuring the defensive back discussing the competition inside the cornerback room.

“We want competition in the room, that breeds the best character of a player.”

Bullard’s absence created first-team opportunities as the Packers continued evaluating the depth and versatility of their defensive backs. The injury is not considered serious, and Bullard expressed confidence that he could play if the Packers had a game this week.

The Packers listed Nixon and Valentine as their starting outside cornerbacks on their first unofficial depth chart Monday. Bullard remained atop the depth chart at nickel, reinforcing his established position within the secondary.

Still, his comments focused on the group instead of his standing. That approach reflects a training camp in which several defensive roles remain unsettled and every practice rep carries value.

With Green Bay’s preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers approaching Thursday, the competition now enters preseason action for the Packers. Bullard believes that process can help the Packers determine which combination gives their defense the strongest secondary entering the regular season.
