Notts County have been active this summer in their bid to be a competitive side in League One next term. They have spent very little so far, and now they are utilising the loan market.
According to football.london, the Magpies have reached an agreement with Chelsea to bring Ishe Samuels-Smith to Meadow Lane in a straight loan deal. Personal terms have also been agreed, and the prospect is set to join.
Martin Paterson’s side play the type of football that the Premier League outfit want for the 20-year-old to continue his development. The left-back has huge potential, and he could quickly become one of Notts County’s best performers in the 2026/27 campaign.
Notts County will want a repeat of their loan successes last season
The Magpies’ use of the loan market last season was extremely successful as they achieved promotion from League Two via the play-offs. Tom Iorpenda, Jayden Luker and Tyrese Hall in particular were superb for Paterson’s side.
Iorpenda was arguably the standout from the loanees signed. It’s no surprise he has garnered interest from the Championship. If Notts County can get a similar return from their signings this transfer window, they will be in for an exciting term in the third tier.
Most of their arrivals this summer have been free transfers, which is almost identical to their business this time last year. It seemed to work in the Magpies’ favour before, so their method in bringing new players in is clearly beneficial.
Samuels-Smith looks to be a different calibre of loan. Although Sonny Aljofree’s stint from Manchester United last season had mixed reviews, the 20-year-old could be a real difference-maker for Notts County in League One.
Paterson has done well to attract such an exciting prospect to Meadow Lane this summer. It’s a testament to his style of play that Chelsea have decided to loan the 20-year-old for the campaign.
Samuels-Smith played six times in the Championship last season for Swansea City. However, a drop down to League One could do wonders for his development. It may have been too much too soon for the defender, and he will get regular game time for Notts County amid a lack of depth in his position.
Attaining a player from the Premier League is a huge coup for the Magpies, and his quality will be evident from the outset. Not only will his individual displays impact their success this term, but it will also help boost the standards at the club on and off the pitch.
