Liverpool set to compete with Newcastle for former Chelsea defender
Liverpool have been linked with former Chelsea and England defender Fikayo Tomori.
According to Quotidiano Sportivo, as reported by CaughtOffside is keen on returning to England, and as he enters the final year of his contract at AC Milan, the Italian giants would be happy to offload him for a fee, as they are unlikely to extend the deal for the 28-year-old defender.
Liverpool could be set to compete with Newcastle for the signature of the defender. Tomori would add depth to the Liverpool defence, but also help the setup of the squad as a homegrown player.
Tomori’s history and his place in the Liverpool squad
Tomori was at Chelsea from under-eight level and made his first appearance on the Chelsea first-team bench at Anfield in 2016, and while he didn’t get on, he got his first sense of first-team football in teh Anfield atmosphere.
After some loans in the Championship at Brighton, Hull and Derby, he got experience under Frank Lampard at the latter. When Lampard came to Chelsea and the club were handed a transfer ban, Tomori got his chance to become a regular first-team member in the 2019-20 season.
He made his England debut in 2019 and would go on to play six times for them so far, with his most recent game coming in the pre-World Cup friendlies, although he didn’t make the final squad.
For Liverpool, he would likely come in as a third or fourth choice centre-back behind Virgil van Dijk and Ronald Araujo. He would join Jeremy Jacquet as backup, but could be a long-term option if Van Dijk were not to extend for the club and Araujo is only at the club on loan.
