Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff City show interest in Liverpool prospect as loan mooted - report

Sheffield Wednesday have been credited with interest in a Liverpool defender

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly interested in Liverpool defender Calum Scanlon.

The 21-year-old, a left-back by trade, has been on the books at Anfield since his move from Birmingham City as a 15-year-old.

He has had loan spells away from Merseyside at Millwall and Cardiff City, and helped the latter seal promotion from League One last season.

Sheffield Wednesday linked with Liverpool’s Callum Scanlon

According to The Athletic, Scanlon could move out on loan again and has attracted interest from League One promotion hopefuls Wednesday.

His former club Cardiff are also said to be keen, which could present a challenge for Wednesday if they do move for the young defender.

The report has indicated Scanlon could be among the first of Liverpool’s young prospects to move out on a temporary basis. Loan exits for goalkeeper Ármin Pécsi, defender Amara Nallo and midfielder Kyle Kelly have already been sanctioned.

Sheffield Wednesday’s left-back shortage and use of young loanees

Wednesday managed to retain Max Lowe following their relegation from the Championship but are not blessed with depth in the left-back department.

Academy product Reece Johnson was an option for the Owls last term, although has since been loaned to National League outfit Eastleigh.

Scanlon, a former England youth international, would arguably be a shrewd addition to Henrik Pedersen’s squad. However, Liverpool may have reservations over his prospects in South Yorkshire given Lowe’s status in the Owls ranks.

On the other hand, Wednesday have been effective developers of young Premier League talent in recent years. Among those have benefited from spells at Hillsborough are Manchester United’s Harry Amass, Fulham’s Shea Charles and Manchester City’s Jaden Heskey.

Wednesday are due to begin their League One campaign away at Leyton Orient on Saturday (August 15). They returned to competitive action last weekend, defeating Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the Carabao Cup.
