MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, August 11, 1919, one of the greatest franchises in NFL history was founded in Green Bay.
The Packers came to be in one of the editorial rooms of the old Green Bay Press-Gazette building.
There was no announcement that the meeting was taking place, and the Press-Gazette didn’t say that preliminary work had been completed before the meeting, or that the meeting itself triggered a rapid-fire chain of events that led to the Packers becoming a team.
Two days later, the team was referred to as the Packers for the first time, after the announcement that the Indian Packing Company would sponsor the team.
The Press-Gazette then announced the team would play home games at Hagemeister Park.
The paper also listed 38 prospective candidates for the team, mostly former high school standouts from Green Bay East and West High Schools. Full uniforms would be given to 20 players.
When the second meeting was held at the Press-Gazette on August 14, nearly 25 players were in attendance.
It was then that Curly Lambeau was elected Captain of the team, while George Whitney Calhoun would serve as the team’s manager.
