Arne Slot had a brilliant first season with Liverpool. Arriving to take over from Jurgen Klopp, the manager and those in charge of transfer for the Reds decided not to make too many changes.
That worked out well as there was no post-Klopp disruption. Slot took Liverpool to the Premier League title and it looked like the start of a long relationship.
However, the second season didn’t go to plan. New faces came in and some of the old ones clearly felt they weren’t appreciated enough.
Friction behind the scenes was met with confusion on the pitch, and the champions stumbled throughout much of the season.
Liverpool finished fifth, 25 points behind winners Arsenal. The Reds were also 11 points behind Manchester United, something which would have been unthinkable a year earlier.
Arne Slot after Liverpool
The 47-year-old Dutchman was shown the Anfield door at the end of May, with Andoni Iraola being named as his replacement within days.
Back in the Netherlands, Arne Slot has been linked to several positions. One of those is manager of the Dutch national side.
Ronald Koeman has stepped down following the World Cup and several names have been thrown into the hat. Slot is one, and Louis van Gaal has also been linked.
Recent rumours in the Netherlands suggested Slot had been offered the job and turned it down, with the insinuation being the contract wasn’t good enough.
The manager will have got a big pay off from Liverpool, so some assumed he’d take lower wages.
Manager moves to dismiss claims
Arne Slot has now taken the step of dismissing these claims. The manager has released a statement denying he even discussed a contract.
“Over the past few weeks, and particularly the past few days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, including regarding salary and contract duration. That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks.
“At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team.
“I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week. For now, I believe that club football still has a lot to offer me.
“It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me.”
