Arne Slot has been forced to release a statement denying reports over talks to take the Netherlands job, clarifying his next steps after leaving Liverpool.

Since his dismissal from Liverpool at the end of May, Slot has largely stayed out of the spotlight while speculation continues over his future.

Linked with both Fulham and AC Milan before they hired Alvaro Arbeloa and Ruben Amorim respectively, the 47-year-old has been most prominently backed to take over from Ronald Koeman as Netherlands manager.

But following reports he had withdrawn from talks with the Dutch FA (KNVB) after a dispute over his contract, including a proposed salary, Slot has dismissed all claims.

“Over the past few weeks, and particularly the past few days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team,” his statement, per VI.nl, reads.

“[It was claimed] that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, including regarding salary and contract duration.

“That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks.”

Slot did confirm talks over the position, but added: “That is only logical when you are approached for an important position and want to get a better picture of the role and the expectations.”

It is now almost two-and-a-half months since he was sacked by Liverpool, and with assistants Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Sipke Hulshoff taking roles with Feyenoord, his situation is no clearer.

But Slot has maintained that he is only seeking a job in club football at this stage in his career.

“I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day, something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team,” he continued.

“And [that is] why I chose not to continue the talks and not to start negotiations on what a possible contract might look like.

“I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week.

“For now, I believe that club football still has a lot to offer me.”

Slot did conclude: “It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me.”
