Chelsea have put a rather steep price tag on Liam Delap, according to reports. The Blues will only entertain serious talks if a club makes a bid in excess of £50 million, it is claimed. The 23-year-old centre-forward is still under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2031, giving the Blues a fair amount of leverage, although his maiden campaign in west London was underwhelming.
He was signed for £30 million from Ipswich Town in June 2025 on a six-year contract after Chelsea beat off a prolonged chase from Manchester United, Newcastle, and Everton. Hamstring and shoulder problems broke his rhythm, and he managed only two goals and four assists in 41 appearances in all competitions. With a forward department packed out – Joao Pedro entrenched, Nicolas Jackson back, Emmanuel Emegha signed – his position has become more and more untenable.
But earlier reports told a distinctly more restrained story. It had been reported that Chelsea would accept a fee of between £35 million and £40 million for the 23-year-old, with Nottingham Forest, Everton, and Leeds United monitoring developments. Everton’s reported £30-35 million offer was thought to be too low, while Newcastle United’s pending interest could well inflate the final price. The probable exit of the striker has gained further impetus with the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton.
Andy Townsend Delivers Hard Truth On Liam Delap’s Chelsea Situation
The hierarchy is bullish on Delap’s residual market worth, but not everyone in the club’s extended orbit is. Andy Townsend, former Chelsea captain and midfielder, has been ruthless in his assessment, telling the Blues to cut their losses and let the forward go rather than persist with an experiment that has yielded few dividends.
Townsend believes Delap has looked curiously subdued in a Chelsea shirt compared to the marauding, abrasive centre-forward who terrorised defences at Portman Road. He asked if it was tactical suffocation or the mental burden of increased scrutiny, before adding:
“He’s looked like a Championship player trying to cut it at a top Premier League team.”
But the pundit offered mitigation, pointing to Fernando Torres as a precedent for a striker whose move to Stamford Bridge just didn’t work out. He was an advocate of a move to a club where Delap would be the undisputed centrepiece, arguing that prolonged time on the bench inevitably dulls the keenest instincts of a young forward. He suggested Delap could be an aggressive number nine in Everton’s attacking depth.
Whether any suitor will agree to Chelsea’s higher price or whether the Blues will finally slide back down into their initial range before the window slams shut remains to be seen.
