The New England Patriots hope to return to the Super Bowl, during the 2026 NFL season. With preseason games on the way, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is revealing more about the health and status of starting quarterback Drake Maye.
“QB Drake Maye is not expected to play in Thursday’s preseason opener, per Mike Vrabel, who says that is always subject to change,” ESPN reporter Mike Reiss posted to X, formerly Twitter.
New England is expected to give other quarterbacks some snaps in their preseason games. That includes Tommy DeVito.
“I think he's really done a nice job,” Vrabel said of DeVito, per 98.5 the SportsHub. “He did a nice job in the blue-white scrimmage, operating and doing things exactly the way that (quarterback coach) Ashton (Grant) and (offensive coordinator) Josh (McDaniels) are coaching those guys to do it, and we'll see how he responds today.”
Vrabel says other starters may also sit out during the team's preseason opener.
“I mean that's really the only reason that we do these joint practices will be a lot of the front-line players and whoever's available,” Vrabel said. “Some of the guys that maybe won't get as much work today will get you know extensive work in the game on Thursday. That's just kind of how it goes. So let's see how today goes, and we can always adjust and plan accordingly.”
New England has high expectations for Maye and the team this upcoming season. The young quarterback led New England to a surprising appearance in the Super Bowl in 2025. The Patriots lost that game to the Seattle Seahawks.
