The Athletic: Liverpool expect £180k-a-week midfielder to be crucial to Iraola after arriving at AXA

**Liverpool haven’t been heavily linked with any midfield signings, which is a surprise after last season, but they currently don’t seem likely to make any midfield sales either.**

FSG seem to be putting a lot of faith in new head coach Andoni Iraola’s ability to turn things around without major signings. It’s also likely that, after last summer’s £460m spend, they are being more cautious with their investments this year.

According to [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7503457/2026/08/11/enzo-fernandez-transfer-latest-chelsea-manchester-city-arsenal-liverpool-man-utd-dealsheet/#:~:text=Ifeanyi%20Ndukwe%20is,elsewhere%20in%20Europe.)‘s James Pearce and Gregg Evans, Liverpool have no plans to let Alexis Mac Allister leave the club this summer, while Curtis Jones’ future remains unclear.

They report the Transfer Dealsheet: _“Another player not likely to move is Alexis Mac Allister, who has been linked with various clubs over the past week. Mac Allister joined Liverpool’s pre-season on Monday having had an extended post-World Cup break and is expected to be a key part of the squad this season._

_“With Curtis Jones’ future uncertain, it’s unlikely the club would listen to offers for a second senior midfielder so close to the new season, even with Mac Allister only having two years left on his contract.”_

Mac Allister may rediscover his best form under Andoni Iraola

-------------------------------------------------------------

As long as Jones might leave, it’s difficult to place him in Liverpool’s plans for the season ahead, but Mac Allister is still a very good player as evidenced by yet another World Cup final appearance with Argentina over the summer.

While he and his compatriots were unsuccessful in their attempt to make it consecutive world championship titles, we saw a version of Mac Allister under Lionel Scaloni that Arne Slot failed to platform.

After appearing unfit and lethargic for most of last season, the former Brighton and Hove Albion star was relentless in his pressing and much sharper on the ball.

If Liverpool can get that version of Macca back, Andoni Iraola will be very pleased. Indeed, the Spaniard is just the sort of coach to maximise the 27-year-old’s abilities.

Mac Allister has two years and £15.6m remaining on his [£180,000 per week Liverpool contract](https://www.capology.com/player/alexis-mac-allister-36153/), so one way or another, this might be the last season of his at Anfield.
