Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk U-turn solves one Alonso problem but creates another
Mykhailo Mudryk agreeing to leave Chelsea temporarily gives Xabi Alonso some welcome clarity, but choosing the right destination may now be more important than simply getting the winger out of Stamford Bridge.
The Mykhailo Mudryk loan situation changed significantly on Tuesday when Nizaar Kinsella reported that the 25-year-old had agreed to leave before the transfer deadline. Strasbourg have been discussed, although Mudryk would reportedly prefer another Premier League club and there is also interest from Italy.
That decision removes one question for Chelsea. The next one is harder: where can Mudryk actually play enough football to rebuild his career?

A temporary departure makes sense when viewed against the circumstances of Mudryk’s return.
ReadChelsea reported earlier on Tuesday that meetings at the end of Chelsea’s tour resulted in the winger accepting a loan as his next step. Three Premier League clubs had already made approaches earlier this month.
Mudryk now needs competitive football rather than another season spent fighting for occasional minutes.
Chelsea’s attacking structure under Alonso makes that particularly relevant. Premier League tactical analysis expects the Spaniard’s 3-4-3 to use two inside forwards behind the striker, with the wing-backs providing much of the natural width. Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers appear particularly well suited to those central attacking spaces.
Mudryk can play inside, but his greatest threat has traditionally come when receiving wider and accelerating into space. Chelsea’s own previous analysis of his game highlighted how often he stayed close to the left touchline before driving at defenders.
ReadChelsea examined how Mudryk could fit under Alonso shortly after his return and concluded that his clearest route may have been as a direct rotational attacker rather than an automatic starter. Tuesday’s decision suggests Chelsea have now decided regular football elsewhere offers greater value.
Premier League or Strasbourg presents Chelsea with different benefits
Strasbourg would give Chelsea greater control over Mudryk’s environment and development while keeping him within the BlueCo structure. For a player returning after such a long competitive absence, there is an obvious appeal to a controlled pathway.
A Premier League loan offers something different.
If Mudryk’s longer-term aim remains succeeding at Chelsea, regular English top-flight football would provide the clearest test of whether his speed and directness can translate consistently at that level. Chelsea would also learn far more about his readiness for Alonso’s squad by watching him face the same opponents and physical demands.
There is a risk, however. A Premier League move only works if he is joining a club prepared to give him substantial minutes. Moving from Chelsea’s crowded attacking group to another side where he becomes a rotation player would achieve very little.
Chelsea can now make a longer-term decision from stronger evidence
Chelsea do not need to decide Mudryk’s permanent future this summer.
The smarter option is to use the season to establish what player they now have.
His return initially created another selection problem for Alonso in an already deep attacking squad. A productive loan could turn that problem into an asset, either by producing a player capable of returning to Chelsea next summer or by rebuilding his value ahead of a permanent move.
The Mykhailo Mudryk loan therefore should not be judged by the biggest club available.
Chelsea need the destination offering the clearest role, the most minutes and the best opportunity to discover whether Mudryk can still become an important Premier League player.
