Ex-Liverpool striker Michael Owen says the Reds can finish runners-up behind Arsenal this season.
Asked by Metro for his predicted top six ahead of the new campaogn, Owen replied:
“At this stage, I would go Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd and then Spurs.”
When elaborating further on Andoni Iraola’s side’s chances, Owen said the signing of Bradley Barcola could prove pivotal if they want to be serious title contenders:
“I do think Liverpool need more, but it looks like Barcola is the one they want and it will cost them a huge amount of money to get him in. But if they can do that and add more depth, more quality, then they can really challenge for the title.”
Liverpool need to bring in more signings
Owen’s prediction seems overly optimistic at the moment. Without additions up front, it’s hard to see the Reds troubling the top two, and they may have a tough task sealing Champions League qualification.
Ronald Araujo’s arrival on loan from Barcelona does plug a hole in the backline, but Iraola will be keen to add at least two more forwards to his squad before the transfer deadline on September 1st.

What is the latest on the Barcola transfer?
It seems as if the Reds have agreed personal terms with the France international, and the winger’s decision to withdraw from the squad for PSG’s UEFA Super Cup clash with Aston Villa due to illness does hint that he may be trying to protect his fitness before leaving the Parc des Princes.
Of course, the big stumbling block remains the transfer fee. PSG have yet to climb down on their asking price. They have been demanding close to £145m, which is a lot more than sporting director Richard Hughes is prepared to pay for Barcola.
