The Seattle Seahawks are getting closer to having one of their most important defensive weapons back on the field.
Nick Emmanwori underwent ankle surgery during the offseason, putting his availability for the beginning of Seattle's title defense in question. However, the latest update provides hope that the versatile defensive back could return in time for Week 1.
According to ESPN, the Seahawks believe Emmanwori has a chance to play in the regular-season opener against the New England Patriots, although his status remains uncertain.
Preseason action begins this week. Seattle certainly won't rush Emmanwori back for meaningless preseason snaps. The priority is having him healthy for games that count, especially considering how uniquely valuable he is to Mike Macdonald's defense.
Teammate Julian Love even described Emmanwori as a “unicorn,” which perfectly summarizes Seattle's problem if he isn't available.
There isn't an obvious replacement. ESPN reports D'Anthony Bell is expected to receive an increased role, but Macdonald said “everything is on the table.” Seattle could use a cornerback, safety, or even a linebacker to replace some of what Emmanwori provides.
Second-round rookie Bud Clark could also factor into the Seahawks' three-safety packages, while third-round cornerback Julian Neal is working his way back from a leg injury.
Those are useful options, but none can perfectly replicate Emmanwori's skill set. That's why getting him healthy for Week 1 would be massive. Emmanwori has the physical tools and versatility to develop into one of the NFL's premier safeties in the near future. After helping Seattle reach the mountaintop last season, expectations will only increase in 2026.
