Burnley are set to bolster their defence this window, with the signing of Max Alleyne for the 2026/27 season.
Burnley lack a lot of depth at centre-back ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign. However, that is about to change with the signing of Max Alleyne from Manchester City.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Clarets have agreed a deal with City to bring the youngster on loan for the 2026/27 season. The move will have no buy-option included, and the defender will return to the Etihad at the end of the term. His medical is set to go ahead tomorrow.
Alleyne spent the first half of last campaign on loan at Watford before he was recalled by his parent club to cover for injuries to their senior players. His departure certainly derailed the Hornets for the rest of the year.
The 21-year-old did feature in the Premier League upon the termination of his spell at Vicarage Road but failed to hold down a first-team spot under Pep Guardiola. Now he has the chance to impress Enzo Maresca at Burnley.
Alleyne had a positive stint at Watford last term and did well overall when called upon by Manchester City to start in the Premier League. The 21-year-old isn’t far off from being ready to compete in the top flight. However, another spell in the Championship could be hugely beneficial for his development.
The prospect is predominantly a ball-playing defender and is comfortable playing out from the back and helping maintain possession. He has been nurtured superbly by City, and it’s no surprise they don’t want to sell him at the end of his loan deal.
Max Alleyne’s stats for Manchester City
Alleyne needs regular game time and the conditions to secure his arrival at Turf Moor is likely because of promises that he will get consistent minutes. Nicky Hayen certainly must involve the 21-year-old to better his side’s chances of winning promotion from the Championship next term.
The Manchester City prospect simply has to play pretty much every week for the Clarets. It looks like he will be part of a back three under the guidance of Hayen. In their recent EFL Cup match against Notts County, that is what the new Burnley head coach lined up with.
The backline consisted of Kyle Walker, Joe Worral and Bashir Humphreys. Alleyne has previously played on the right side of a back three at Watford last season, and that would appear his better-suited position.
Walker is unlikely to feature every game for Burnley, and the 21-year-old will ultimately be his successor. The former Manchester City man can also be a good mentor for the centre-back for the 2026/27 campaign.
