Tottenham defender has become a coveted commodity in the transfer market following his World Cup displays.
Tottenham Hotspur did well to act quickly in the transfer window and bring in players who could make an instant impact at White Hart Lane. However, it is also important to note that despite spending heavily on new players, the club has still not managed to bring in any attacking reinforcements this summer.
It would not be wrong to suggest that the N17 bosses are struggling to negotiate deals for some of their key attacking targets this summer. The North Londoners have been locked in negotiations with Manchester City for Savinho for two months. Yet, a breakthrough hasn’t arrived. At the same time, Spurs are keen to find solutions for players whose futures are up in the air.
Djed Spence is a player wanted by several clubs across Europe. Premier League duo Manchester United and Everton have been showing an interest in the England international, who seems open to a departure from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for regular opportunities. Inter Milan could reportedly revisit a deal for the 26-year-old if Tottenham lower their asking price.
Chelsea urged to make a move for Djed Spence
Spence has been an important player for Tottenham since the second half of the 2024/25 campaign. In the upcoming season, though, the full-back faces competition from Destiny Udogie, Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson to clock regular minutes in the side. This has left him with a decision to make on his future, with several clubs vying for the 26-year-old’s signature.
Now, talkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend has urged his former club Chelsea to make a move for Spence. He believes the defender would be a strong addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad.
*“I don’t know what he would cost because of how well he did at the World Cup,*” Andy Townsend said on talkSPORT show.
“Has that inflated his price tag unreasonably? I genuinely haven’t got a clue.
“If Cucurella is going to Real Madrid for over £60million, I would have thought Djed Spence at £40million, something around that figure, would be a decent acquisition.
“It wouldn’t do them any harm to have someone who is still looking to improve as a player, who is all ears and wants to get better. He is now showing what he is capable of, so that wouldn’t be a bad piece of business.”
No chance for Spence to join Chelsea
Chelsea need quality and depth in the full-back areas of the pitch after Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid, and signing Spence would make a lot of sense.
However, Spurs’ board maintains a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to strengthening their primary cross-town rivals. Tottenham have traditionally guarded against direct player sales to their chief rivals, so even if Chelsea think of making an approach for Spence, it is going to be rebuffed.
The Lilywhites would prefer selling the Englishman abroad if their asking price of around €40m is met. Spence appears interested in a move to Serie A, and if Inter Milan can conjure up a package close to €40m, the N17 bosses may consider a sale.
