Under general manager Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur, the Green Bay Packers haven’t shied away from acquiring star talent. We’ve seen many examples of that play out, with acquisitions for players like Josh Jacobs, Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs, and Javon Hargrave. Of course, not all of these decisions have worked out in the Packers’ favor from beginning to end.
Now, one of those high-profile acquisitions may not be available for the start of the season.

There’s no denying that Josh Jacobs has been an excellent addition to the Packers’ offense. He earned Pro Bowl honors while ranking sixth in the NFL in rushing yards in his first season. While he wasn’t quite as effective in 2025, Jacobs still topped 1,200 yards from scrimmage.
Undoubtedly a key proponent in coach LaFleur’s offense, the Packers may have to start finding ways to get their running game going without the help of their three-time Pro Bowler.
According to ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, it’s “possible the Packers are gonna lose Josh Jacobs” to a suspension for the start of the season. Though, Schefter didn’t speculate on how long the NFL suspension may last. That could be part of what’s still under review by the league office.
“It’s also possible the Green Bay Packers are gonna lose Josh Jacobs. That also still is under review, still a pending situation with the NFL.”
Jacobs isn’t alone. Schefter confirmed that there are several other players who are still under review for a potential NFL suspension. But the only player mentioned from the Packers was Jacobs.
The 28-year-old Packers running back was arrested and accused of domestic violence this offseason. Any potential suspension would likely arrive before the start of the season, so the Packers will know exactly how severe the situation is and what plans they may need to make if Jacobs isn’t available.
Competing for the top backup role to Jacobs are Chris Brooks, 2024 third-round pick Marshawn Lloyd, Pierre Strong Jr., Damien Martinez, and undrafted rookie Jaden Nixon. While the preseason will serve as an opportunity for the backups to show what they’re capable of, a significant suspension would likely prompt a move from Green Bay’s front office. For now, they may be content with waiting to see who may become available when rosters trim down from 90 to 53 at the end of the month.
