We’re just ten days away from the 2026/27 Premier League season’s opening match, and excitement is continuing to build as Arsenal and Coventry City prepare to square off in the campaign curtain-raiser next week. It’s set to be a fascinating contest pitting the riches of the league champions against the grit and tenacity of a newly promoted club.

In the background, the summer transfer window is picking up some pace, as clubs scramble to get fresh signings on board in time for the new season. Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle United have all been busy, while the likes of Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Liverpool have gone about their business at a notably more sedate pace.
Today’s transfer rumour mill round-up begins at Villa Park, where Aston Villa are on the hunt for a new forward. Reports from Italian print outlet Tuttosport, via Sport Witness, claim that the Villans are stepping up their interest in Juventus forward Jonathan David, who looks set to leave the Serie A side after just one season in Turin.
The Canada international, who scored three times in five games at the World Cup, is said to have attracted the interest of both Villa and Palace. However, it’s claimed that Juve’s prime reason for selling the player is his high wages, which could be an issue for both the Villans and the Eagles. That said, his £17m asking price could tempt both sides to make an offer.
The 3AM Verdict: David was prolific during his lengthy spell in Ligue 1 with Lille, and it’s too soon to write him off after one poor season in Serie A. If Villa or Palace can convince the player to lower his wage demands, they could land a serious bargain capable of banging in the goals - he scored 87 of them in 178 games for Lille, and at 26-years-old, David’s still in his prime.

Over to St. James’ Park next, where Newcastle United will be desperate for the season to begin as matters off the field continue to dominate the headlines. They’ve missed out on numerous signings, waved farewell to Eddie Howe and lost three key players, with little to cheer about in terms of top quality replacements. A report from Team Talk suggests they could now sign two new midfielders: Davide Frattesi and Aleksandar Stankovic, both of whom player for Inter.
The story claims that the Magpies initially made a move to sign Stankovic, but when doing so were offered the opportunity to sign Frattesi too, as Inter look to raise funds to sign Liverpool’s Curtis Jones. Frattesi, a 34-cap Italy international, could cost around £26m, with Stankovic likely to be significantly more expensive and tricky to sign, given his great potential.
The 3AM Verdict: While signing Stankovic looks to be a long shot, Newcastle could do a lot worse than bringing in an experienced midfielder like Fratessi, especially at such a reasonable price. He’s won two Serie A titles and a Coppa Italia during his time with Inter, and would inject some real energy into the Magpies midfield to help fill the Bruno Guimaraes void.

Speaking of Guimaraes, Arsenal could be set to offload a midfielder following the Brazil international’s arrival at the Emirates Stadium, with Myles Lewis-Skelly believed to have been offered to both Chelsea and Man United. Football London report that the player has been on the Blues’ radar for some time, and that Arsenal would “find it very hard to say no” if Chelsea made a significant offer.
There’s no indication of how much the Gunners are looking for to sell the versatile 19-year-old, who only signed a contract extension at the club last summer. It’s worth noting that, as an academy product, Arsenal could class his sale as “pure profit” under PSR, which would give them great spending power in the transfer market.
The 3AM Verdict: Are the Gunners looking to raise funds to sign a big-money left winger? It does rather feel that way. Lewis-Skelly isn’t a great midfielder, nor is a he a great left-back, but his potential is unquestionable.Chelsea have blown far too much money on “potential”, however, and don’t really need to be doing Arsenal any favours financially. We’d be saying ‘thanks, but no thanks’ if we were Chelsea.
