Arsenal Transfer News
Julian Alvarez to Arsenal: Julian Alvarez has returned to Atlético Madrid for pre-season medical checks as speculation gathers pace. The 26-year-old Argentina international wants a transfer after telling ESPN Argentina during the World Cup that a move would be best for everyone and would help him fulfil his dream. He did not name Barcelona, yet reports have long linked him with the Catalan club.
Arsenal remain interested after missing out on Vinícius Júnior, while Atlético have made their position plain. CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has rejected the idea of selling Álvarez, particularly to Barcelona, and Diego Simeone has repeated that the striker remains central to his plans. The coach wants Álvarez to keep developing in Madrid.
The numbers explain Arsenal’s interest. Álvarez produced 20 goals and 10 assists in 52 appearances during 2025/26, including 10 goals and five assists across 15 Champions League games. He then played eight matches at the 2026 World Cup, scoring once before Argentina lost the final to Spain.
Still, my view puts an Arsenal deal below 15 per cent. Álvarez reportedly wants Barcelona, and that preference matters because Atlético can refuse to sell to a domestic rival. The club rejected a €150m offer from Real Madrid, while Gil Marín said Atlético would not accept €100m, €150m or even €200m for the forward.
There is another problem for Arsenal. The €130m clause mentioned in some reports needs caution because Atlético have publicly cited a €500m release clause, while other figures have appeared in negotiations. Either way, a fee above £100m would create a serious financial test after Arsenal’s summer spending and could bring Profit and Sustainability Rules concerns.
Arteta admires Álvarez’s versatility, pressing and finishing, but Arsenal must judge whether such an outlay makes sense with other squad needs. Barcelona’s finances could eventually derail their pursuit, which would strengthen Arsenal’s hand. Even then, Atlético’s resistance gives the player’s current club enormous leverage.

For now, Julian Alvarez to Arsenal looks more like a difficult contingency than the expected outcome at this stage. Álvarez wants change, Arsenal have interest, yet Atlético have shown they can reject enormous bids without blinking.
