Arsenal came closer to signing Vinicius Junior than many initially realised before Real Madrid finally convinced the Brazilian to sign a new contract until 2032.
According to The Athletic, the Premier League champions had laid extensive groundwork for one of the most ambitious transfers in their history and remained confident of landing the 26-year-old until the final round of negotiations in Madrid.
Arsenal’s interest was not speculative.
The club’s ownership, sporting director Andrea Berta and Mikel Arteta were all fully committed to the pursuit, with months of high-level discussions held with Vinicius and his representatives.
Those talks centred primarily on football, with Arsenal explaining how the Brazilian would become a central figure in the club’s attempt to build on last season’s Premier League title.
The commercial possibilities attached to such a move were also discussed.
