Derek Carr Shockingly Joins Offensive Coaching Staff In Big Ten
In the coming months, former NFL quarterback Derek Carr will begin his coaching career. According to UCLA’s announcement on Monday, Carr will work for head coach Bob Chesney.
He will serve as Chesney’s special advisor. According to a release, he will work with UCLA’s offensive staff on game-planning strategies and with the quarterbacks.
“We are excited to welcome Derek to our program,” Chesney said. “He has played the quarterback position at a high level for more than a decade, and his experience, leadership and football knowledge will be an incredible resource for our coaching staff and student-athletes.
“What stands out most is his passion for the game and his commitment to developing young people. Derek will have a tremendous impact on our players and is a great addition to our program.”

He played college football for Fresno State before being drafted in the second round by the Oakland Raiders. In 2023 and 2024, he joined the New Orleans Saints after spending nine years with the Raiders.
During his 11 seasons in the NFL, Carr threw for 41,245 yards. His touchdowns and interceptions were 257 and 112, respectively. Darrick Yray, UCLA’s general manager, was on Carr’s staff at Fresno State during his college career.
Having spent the last two seasons at James Madison, Chesney is entering his first season at UCLA. While leading the Dukes, he was 21-6.Nico Iamaleava, a former five-star recruit, is one of the best quarterbacks in college football.
