Finding a superstar in the first two rounds of your fantasy football draft isn't difficult. Finding one in the middle rounds can win you the league.

That's why Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey should be circled on every fantasy manager's draft board heading into the 2026 season.

McConkey enters Year 3 as Justin Herbert's WR1, and now he gets to play in an offense coordinated by Mike McDaniel. Combine McDaniel's creativity with Herbert's arm talent and McConkey's elite route-running ability, and everything is set up for a massive season.

If McConkey is available in the middle rounds, don't hesitate.

Ladd McConkey 2026 Fantasy Outlook

We already know what McConkey's ceiling can look like. As a rookie in 2024, the former Georgia star exploded for 82 receptions, 1,149 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He immediately established chemistry with Herbert and looked capable of becoming the Chargers' long-term WR1.

His production declined in 2025, when he finished with 66 catches for 789 yards and six touchdowns. Those aren't terrible numbers. They're just disappointing compared to what McConkey accomplished as a rookie.

Fantasy managers should be betting on a rebound. A realistic expectation should be at least 80 receptions, more than 1,000 receiving yards and seven-plus touchdowns. If McDaniel immediately clicks with Herbert and the Chargers' offense takes the anticipated step forward, McConkey could blow past those numbers from a season ago.

The talent has never been the question. McConkey is an excellent route runner who understands how to manipulate defensive backs, change direction and create separation. Herbert clearly trusts him, and that quarterback-receiver relationship should only improve in their third season together.

He's also accustomed to playing in meaningful games. McConkey won two national championships under Kirby Smart at Georgia. Pressure isn't exactly unfamiliar territory. Now he enters 2026 with another incentive: proving he's worthy of a massive contract extension.

This is where things get really exciting. McDaniel is walking into an offense with weapons.

Omarion Hampton gives Los Angeles a dangerous threat out of the backfield. David Njoku and Oronde Gadsden II provide Herbert with dangerous options at tight end. Quentin Johnston and Tre Harris return at receiver, while rookie Brenen Thompson adds another explosive weapon. Don't forget about Alec Ingold and Charlie Kolar in the run game.

Despite the weapons, McConkey should remain Herbert's favorite receiver.

McDaniel's arrival should create opportunities to get McConkey into space, manufacture favorable matchups and allow his route-running ability to become even more dangerous.

Defenses can't simply devote everything toward stopping him, either. There are too many other weapons that need attention. McConkey doesn't need 150 targets to become a fantasy star. He needs efficient opportunities in a better offense.

ESPN's WR18 Ranking Could Undersell McConkey

ESPN currently ranks McConkey as WR18 entering the fantasy season, placing him directly behind Philadelphia Eagles' DeVonta Smith and ahead of new Denver Broncos receiver Jaylen Waddle.

McConkey has the potential to outperform those rankings. The difference between drafting a player who finishes exactly where expected and finding a league-winning steal often comes down to opportunity versus draft position. McConkey checks both boxes. If fantasy managers can land him somewhere around Rounds 6-9, they're acquiring an every-week starter without spending premium draft capital.

That's exactly the type of player you search for in the middle rounds.

His floor should remain relatively safe because of his established relationship with Herbert. His ceiling, meanwhile, could be another 1,100-plus-yard season with close to double-digit touchdowns. And if everything clicks under McDaniel? A top-12 fantasy finish at receiver shouldn't be considered impossible.

The Chargers believe they finally have an offense capable of helping Herbert and Jim Harbaugh get over the hump. McDaniel's arrival only increases those expectations. McConkey should be one of the biggest beneficiaries.

Fantasy football leagues aren't usually won because someone correctly drafted a superstar with the third overall pick. They're won when someone finds a player several rounds later who produces like an early-round selection. If you're sitting in the middle rounds and need another receiver, don't wait around hoping he comes back to you.

Take him.

By November, everyone else in your league might be wondering why they didn't.
