Kyler Murray Wins Vikings' Starting Quarterback Job Over J.J. McCarthy 1

Minnesota closed last season by holding off Green Bay in a tense Week 18 finish, a 9-8 campaign that still missed the playoffs. Nine months later, the Vikings’ quarterback room looks nothing like it did on that January afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium. Kyler Murray arrived in Minnesota as a reclamation project this spring. Now, one decision from Kevin O’Connell has reshaped the entire outlook for 2026.

Vikings Name Kyler Murray Starting Quarterback

Head coach Kevin O’Connell ended the Vikings’ quarterback competition on Tuesday, naming Kyler Murray the team’s starter for the 2026 season. The decision came after just 10 practices of training camp, closing a battle many expected to stretch into the preseason.

Murray signed a one-year deal with Minnesota in March, days after the Arizona Cardinals released him following seven seasons and 87 starts. The move put real pressure on J.J. McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, who struggled with accuracy and turnovers during a rocky rookie season as the starter in 2025.

Reports before the signing even suggested the Vikings were exploring an exit strategy for McCarthy, a sign of how thin his margin had become.

O’Connell and new general manager Nolan Teasley met with both quarterbacks Tuesday morning before informing the rest of the roster.

O’Connell told reporters: “There’s comfort from Kyler in the scheme,” pointing to Murray’s command of timing and rhythm through camp.

Murray now becomes Minnesota’s fourth different Week 1 starter in as many seasons, following Kirk Cousins, Sam Darnold and McCarthy himself. McCarthy will serve as the backup, with both quarterbacks expected to play in Saturday’s preseason opener.

Murray and O’Connell Share a Bond That Predates Minnesota

Murray’s comfort inside O’Connell’s offense is not new. The pair’s relationship dates back to Murray’s pre-draft training days, long before either arrived in Minnesota.

Murray recently explained: “Me and Kevin go back to Elite Eleven days.” He said O’Connell has checked in on him consistently in the years since, a connection that helped ease his transition into a new offense this summer.

The trust extends to his contract too. Murray’s one-year deal reportedly includes a no-tag clause, giving him control over his future once the season ends. Analysts have already floated Murray as a long-shot MVP candidate in O’Connell’s system.

That history offers plenty of confidence heading into a stretch that will test it fast, starting this weekend.

Minnesota opens its preseason Saturday against the New York Giants, with Murray and McCarthy both expected to see the field. The Vikings’ real test arrives September 13, when Murray leads the offense at home against the Green Bay Packers to open the 2026 regular season.
