Liverpool tipped to sign Premier League baller "even if he costs £85m-£100m"

Liverpool have been urged to sign Crystal Palace metronome Adam Wharton despite the Reds seemingly not planning any midfield signings this summer.

Signing Bradley Barcola from PSG is Liverpool’s priority this summer, with the French winger agreeing personal terms with the Reds last week as he waits for the two clubs to agree on a transfer fee amid PSG’s £145m asking price.

Ronald Araujo joined the club on loan last week as well, temporarily filling the void left by Ibrahima Konate after his free agency move to Real Madrid following failed contract renewal talks with the Reds.

Liverpool urged to splash £85m-£100m on signing Adam Wharton

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony, who is a boyhood Liverpool supporter, has urged Liverpool to sign Wharton, stating that the money involved should be of no concern given how talented the Palace star is.

MacAnthony told talkSPORT: “I’d love them to sign Adam Wharton. I think [Alexis] Mac Allister, for me, his legs were gone last year. It was only when he put an Argentina shirt on that his legs reappeared.

“If you could do business there with him going, I think you bring [Wharton] in and you’ve got a player for the next seven, eight years that will be a starter. He’s got so much upside and potential in him. Even if he costs £85m-£100m or whatever else, you’re getting the player for the long-term.”

Liverpool don’t appear to be in the market for a new midfielder regardless of how good Wharton is

Wharton would be a wonderful player for Liverpool, particularly given how he suits the Andoni Iraola brand of football, but the Reds don’t appear to be all that concerned with signing new midfielders this summer.

Liverpool haven’t been concretely linked with signing a midfielder so far this summer, which may be a concern given the lethargy that crept into the engine room last season. Arne Slot must accept a fair share of the blame, but it doesn’t seem as though the Merseysiders are planning any significant work in that area.

That said, Liverpool extended Dominik Szoboszlai’s contract, which is a massive short, medium and long-term boost. The Hungarian is said to be earning around £300,000 per week now, befitting his status as one of the world’s best midfielders, and he will star in Iraola’s new-look Liverpool team.
