Florian Wirtz on his clearer role under Iraola and the partnership he is building with Alexander Isak
Florian Wirtz has spoken to the media following the preseason defeat to Monaco and is looking forward to more consistent opportunities in the 10 role under Andoni Iraola.
Wirtz as reported by the Athletic said, “I think it is important to know which position you are going to play. I know that I can probably play different positions, but No 10 is my favourite and maybe my best position, so let’s see how this works out.”
This comment in itself indicated that he feels like he was moved around too much in his position under Arne Slot, as we saw him all over the midfield three behind the striker throughout the season.
Wirtz also commented on his developing relationship with Alexander Isak, “I think today and also last game against Leeds, we had some good combinations,” Wirtz added. “We created some chances together. He is a very, very good player and I enjoy playing with him. We have to work on the connection, but we are still in pre-season, and I think until now it is working well.”
Wirtz reflecting on last season
The 2025/26 season for Wirtz was a difficult first season for Wirtz in the Premier League. He created lots of chances, but was unable to turn this into a large number of goals or assists.
Wirtz added, “Of course there were some games when I wasn’t happy with myself, but also a lot of games when I felt good on the pitch,” he said. “Last season was difficult for the whole club but hopefully we have the right energy and mentality for this season, so every player can shine more.”
“I’ve played one year in England now. I’ve said often enough that it’s a different style of football than in Germany. I got used to the games and to the opponents. I just know how it is now. I’m happy to have my next season.”
All Liverpool fans will be hoping that Wirtz has been able to develop a greater understanding of the role required of him under Iraola and that he is ready to use his greater understanding of English football to have an incredible 2026/27 season.
