Liverpool left-back Calum Scanlon is among a host of young Reds players being touted for a loan move away this summer.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a successful 2025/26 season at Cardiff City, joining midway through the campaign and helping them seal promotion from League One.

He made eight league appearances for the Welsh outfit, prior to returning to Liverpool for the start of pre-season, and he featured during the tour of the USA.

There is every chance that Scanlon once again goes out on loan before the end of the month, and The Athletic‘s James Pearce has suggested as much.

He reports that Cardiff are again keen on signing the defender on a temporary basis, with Sheffield Wednesday also in the mix.

The Owls are now in League One, however, so a Championship move may appeal more to Scanlon.

Pearce also notes that fellow Liverpool defender Luke Chambers is wanted by QPR, while Kieran Morrison has interest from the Netherlands.

A 2nd stint on loan at Cardiff for Calum Scanlon?

Another loan move makes complete sense for Scanlon this summer, allowing him to continue his development at senior level.

A return to Cardiff could be best for the Englishman, given his success there last term, and he could be keen to test himself in the Championship.

Scanlon’s career has been injury-plagued, including an 11-month absence with a hamstring issue, but he spoke impressively earlier this year, highlighting his strength of character.

“I’ve had a lot of injuries, a lot of setbacks as well, but I’ve managed to get through them,” Scanlon said. “I’ve kept my head down, no matter what has been thrown at me.

“Sometimes football throws these things at you. It’s just how you deal with it and I know now that I’m mentally strong.

“I was in the gym the whole of last year but it just spurs you on more. It is very tough. If I’m being honest, some days there’s little motivation but I try to stay disciplined. That’s what gets me through anyway – my discipline.

“I know, even though the motivation might not be there, my goal never changes. So, that’s the important one for me – just keep knocking down the days, no matter how long it is, because I know eventually it will work out.”

Another season away from Liverpool would be ideal for Scanlon, hopefully staying fit throughout, before returning to Anfield again in 2027.

Whether he makes the grade for the Reds long-term remains to be seen, but it is great to see him flourishing after some tough times.
