"Liverpool are lurking..." - Reds eyeing huge move for £100m ace who's a "joy to play with"

Liverpool are “lurking” for the signing of Crystal Palace and England midfielder Adam Wharton this summer, according to a significant new transfer claim.

The 22-year-old has been mentioned as an option for the Reds plenty of times since the end of last season, with Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony the latest to talk up the move:

“I’d love them to sign Adam Wharton. I think [Alexis] Mac Allister, for me, his legs were gone last year. It was only when he put an Argentina shirt on that his legs reappeared.

“If you could do business there with him going, I think you bring [Wharton] in and you’ve got a player for the next seven, eight years that will be a starter. He’s got so much upside and potential in him. Even if he costs £85m-£100m or whatever else, you’re getting the player for the long-term.”

Now, writing on X, a respected source has claimed that Liverpool remain in the mix to snap up Wharton ahead of the new season:

“Our top source in London has confirmed via email, Manchester United met Crystal Palace this afternoon. Talks have reopened regarding Adam Wharton. Liverpool are lurking also. Confirmed.”

Adam Wharton is Liverpool’s perfect midfield option

Wharton is exactly the type of midfielder Liverpool should be looking to sign, with the Palace man a superb No.6 who controls games from his deep role, also tackling well off the ball.

His potential is vast, but he is also ready to be a regular for a club of the Reds’ stature, with Eberechi Eze hailing him during their time together with the Eagles:

“He’s very calm, composed, and a joy to play with. For someone so young, he’s very mature and very wise. When you speak to him, it feels like you’re speaking to someone older than you, that’s the type of person he is. He’s an incredible player.”

Wharton could cost as much as £100m, which is the one drawback regarding a move to Liverpool, but he has the ability to develop into a truly elite midfielder for the Reds and England over time.

The youngster would add balance for Andoni Iraola, with neither Ryan Gravenberch nor Alexis Mac Allister natural No.6s, and they have to be looking to pip Manchester United to his signature.
