**Everton head to Scotland for the biggest test of their pre-season so far, taking on Newcastle United at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.**
It is the first meeting between the two clubs on neutral ground since the 1924 Barcelona Cup final, and both sides’ first-ever visit to the stadium.
It’s a fixture that looks very different to how it did when it was announced back in May.
Newcastle arrive with an entirely new coaching team: Eddie Howe stepped down after nearly five years in charge, with German coach Matthias Jaissle — fresh off two AFC Champions League Elite titles at Al-Ahli — installed in his place.
Jaissle takes charge with the Magpies also working through the exits of Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and captain Bruno Guimarães, making this a genuinely unfamiliar Newcastle side for Moyes to test his own team against.
For Everton, the questions are familiar: how does the front line look, and does the back four look any more settled?
Brennan Johnson could make his first appearance since completing his move from Crystal Palace, while Christian Nørgaard is in line for more minutes, having been an unused substitute against Stuttgart at the weekend.
Jordan Pickford may return in goal after reporting back following his World Cup commitments with England.
Everton’s pre-season form has been a mixed bag — two wins, two defeats and a draw so far, including Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Stuttgart — and with the right-back situation still unresolved, don’t be surprised if Moyes again uses this as another audition for Jake O’Brien or merlin Rohl.
One more friendly follows, at home to Lille on Saturday, before the serious business starts against Crystal Palace on August 22.
