Cleveland Browns news: Players, not plays, make the world go round

Dawgs By Nature

Browns DC: It is the players that make every scheme work (Thomas Moore) - “Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg appears to be holding up well - going against an offense led by the league’s worst quarterback room every day in practice probably helps - but he also comes across as a coach who won’t let his ego get in the way of calling a good game.”

Browns offseason once again proving GM Andrew Berry right (Jared Mueller) - “We may never know what changed, beyond the fact that the team actually had a full complement (and more) of picks, between the first few NFL drafts for GM Andrew Berry and the one that came in 2025. It could be as simple as the number of high draft picks, once depleted by the failed trade for QB Deshaun Watson, but Berry’s rookie class last year likely saved his job.”

Browns roster concern on the defensive side of the ball could be a big one (Barry Shuck) - “In the NFL, the worst thing to happen in a game on the defensive side of the ball is to hand over games by allowing the other team to run against you at will. Especially up the gut.”

What Browns player could be a surprise cut? (Abby Mueller) - “With each new season comes a new roster and a series of important decisions that will take shape throughout training camp. Each year, certain position groups are loaded with talent, forcing the team to make difficult and sometimes unexpected cuts. Looking at the Cleveland Browns’ 2026 roster, which position groups could force the team to make some of its toughest decisions?”

Browns lose a CB, sign a TE

It was bad news today for cornerback Damarri Mathis as he was placed on injured reserve after suffering an injury during practice that led to him being carted off the field. This is the second season in a row that the former fourth-round draft pick has been injured as he spent all of the 2025 season on the injured reserve list while with the Carolina Panthers.

The Browns had signed Mathis as a free agent just before the start of training camp.

General manager Andrew Berry wasted little time in filling the vacant roster spot, but rather than bring in another defensive back, the Browns signed tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who had been with the Philadelphia Eagles after signing as an undrafted free agent earlier this year.

Wright, who is 6-foot-4 and 246 pounds, played two years at Virginia Tech (2022 and 2023) before finishing out his collegiate career at Mississippi. Last season with the Rebels, he had career highs in receptions (39), receiving yards (635), receiving touchdowns (5) and average yards per reception (16.3).

It is possible the Browns just want to see what Wright can do, but it is also worth noting that fifth-round draft selection Joe Royer is still away from the team for personal reasons, and fellow tight end Jack Stoll is also not practicing because of an injury.

The joint practice vs Buffalo next week

I would think Monken is keen to see how both QBs handle the joint practice vs Buffalo. It takes them both a little out of their comfort zone.

If I'm the HC, I'm deciding my QB1 at the end of that week. And probably having him start in the first qtr of that game.

Realistically, when do you see the QB race being called?

Cleveland Browns

Todd Monken said he got ‘emotionally hijacked’ by Browns practice penalties (Beacon Journal) - “The eruption point came after yet another pre-snap penalty. That’s what set Browns coach Todd Monken off at the end of practice on Aug. 10. A day later, Monken understood the cause of the build-up. While the symptom may have been the penalties, the cause wasn’t the players.”

Deshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders: Who won Day 12 of Browns camp and who might start vs. the Bears (cleveland.com) - “Day 12 of Browns training camp wrapped up on Tuesday without Todd Monken naming a starting quarterback for Saturday’s preseason opener against the Bears in Chicago. He might announce his starter by Wednesday, but could also keep folks guessing for a while.”

Training Camp Log, Day 12: No decision on a starting QB for Chicago (Browns Zone) - “Perhaps not since Shakespeare has an “or” carried such magnitude. The Browns were mandated to put out their first unofficial depth chart. With coach Todd Monken not ready to name a starting quarterback for the preseason opener Saturday in Chicago, he listed the top quarterback as “Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders.”

When it comes to Browns QBs, what do we really know so far? (Terry Pluto) - “I’ve been to four Browns practices. Twice Deshaun Watson played well. In the other two practices, Watson was so-so to pretty bad. His accuracy was off. He seemed uncertain and a bit frustrated. Here’s the problem with talking about Watson’s performance in practice. It’s practice.”

What Kyler Murray as QB1 means for Vikings, J.J. McCarthy (ESPN) - “No one should be surprised that Kyler Murray won the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback competition. Murray demonstrated this spring that he had recovered from a foot injury that limited him last season with the Arizona Cardinals. From that point on, it was clear that his talent level represented a formidable obstacle for the Vikings’ incumbent, J.J. McCarthy.”

Colts tab Anthony Richardson Sr. to start preseason opener amid open trade request (The Athletic) - “Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen announced Tuesday that Anthony Richardson Sr. will start the team’s preseason opener Thursday night against the New England Patriots.”

Aaron Rodgers continues to rave about WR Roman Wilson (Behind the Steel Curtain) - “After two weeks of training camp, we are just two days away from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers from Acrisure Stadium. Over the course of these last two weeks, there have been multiple players who have seen their stock rise. Few have done so quite like wide receiver Roman Wilson.”
