Liverpool have announced a new film titled “Captains,” featuring Virgil van Dijk, Steven Gerrard and Graeme Souness, according to the club’s official website.
The film will be available to All Red Full and Video members from Tuesday, August 18.
UK ONLY
The project brings together three men who have worn the Liverpool armband across different eras. The trio met at Anfield to discuss the experience of captaining the club.
Souness captained Liverpool from January 1982 until his departure in 1984. During that spell, he led the side to three First Division titles, three League Cups, and the 1984 European Cup, which was won on penalties against Roma in his final match for the club.
Gerrard held the captaincy for 12 years, from October 2003 to May 2015, the longest tenure of any Liverpool captain. His time with the armband included the 2005 Champions League triumph in Istanbul, an FA Cup, and a League Cup.
Van Dijk is the current captain, having taken over from Jordan Henderson in the summer of 2023. He has since won two major honours in the role: the Carabao Cup in 2024, when he scored the winning goal in extra time against Chelsea, and the Premier League title in 2024-25.
In the film, Souness reflects on the rarity of the role shared by the three men. “How many people can say they’ve captained Liverpool Football Club?” he says. “The three of us can count ourselves very lucky.”
Van Dijk describes what he believes the role demands. “It all starts, I think, with, ‘Do you understand the club in terms of what is required to be a Liverpool player?'”
Gerrard, addressing Van Dijk directly, adds: “The best days ever. I’d swap with you right now!”
The film continues a series of club-produced originals released through All Red Video, the streaming platform run by Liverpool.
