Tottenham have opened talks with Monaco over a potential £51million move for former Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun, according to reports in France.
The England-born forward left Arsenal for Monaco in a £35million deal three years ago and has since established himself as an important player in Ligue 1.
Now, however, Balogun could be on the move again, with Tottenham reportedly making an approach for the 25-year-old.
According to L’Équipe, Spurs have accelerated their interest in recent hours and have begun laying the groundwork for a deal worth around €60million (£51.2m).
Balogun is coming off an impressive season with Monaco and also enjoyed a strong World Cup campaign with the United States.
The striker scored three goals in four appearances at the tournament, helping the USA reach the knockout stages before they were eliminated by Belgium.
His performances have attracted interest from elsewhere, with Newcastle United and clubs in Spain also reportedly monitoring his situation.
Tottenham’s interest comes as manager Roberto De Zerbi looks to strengthen his attacking options.
Dominic Solanke missed Spurs’ recent 1-1 draw with Getafe due to an ankle problem, while Richarlison’s future is also uncertain.
Richarlison has just one year remaining on his contract and De Zerbi recently admitted there is uncertainty over whether the Brazilian intends to stay in north London.
“He’s unbelievable in terms of attitude and behaviour,” De Zerbi said.
“But, in the end, we have to respect what he wants to do. I didn’t understand well because sometimes he says he wants to stay, sometimes he wants to leave.
“We have to speak anyway. There is not any problem. He’s a lovely guy.”
That uncertainty has seemingly encouraged Tottenham to explore the market for another striker, with Balogun now emerging as a serious option.
The former Arsenal academy player has scored 31 goals in 91 appearances for Monaco since completing his move away from north London.
Tottenham would therefore face a significant financial commitment to bring him back to the Premier League, with Monaco reportedly valuing the striker at around £51m.
For Arsenal fans, the potential move would add another intriguing chapter to Balogun’s career after he left the club in search of regular first-team football.
Spurs have now made their interest clear, but negotiations are still at an early stage and no agreement has yet been reached.
With Newcastle and clubs from Spain also reportedly interested, Tottenham could face competition if they decide to push ahead with their pursuit.
