Falcons guard Matthew Bergeron signed a four-year, $96MM extension on Aug. 1, briefly tying him with the Cowboys’ Tyler Smith for the highest average annual value at the position. The Titans’ Peter Skoronski went by those two when he landed a four-year, $100MM payday last week. While Bergeron’s mammoth contract includes up to $60MM in guarantees, less than half of that total ($28.92MM) is fully guaranteed, according to Over the Cap. Bergeron’s $14.77MM signing bonus factors into the fully guaranteed amount, as do workout and per game bonuses through 2027. An unspecified amount of guarantees will kick in on the third day of the 2027 league year. If Bergeron is still a Falcon on the third day of the 2028 league year, he will collect another $7MM in guarantees. The Falcons included a poison pill for 2031, the last year of the contract, to “facilitate a potential Post-June 1 designation” on the first day of the league year, per OTC.
Here is a look at more newly revealed contract details from around the NFL…
Texans defensive end Jadeveon Clowney‘s one-year, $5.5MM deal includes $4.5MM in total guarantees, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reports. Clowney received a $2MM signing bonus and a fully guaranteed $2.5MM salary. He could make another $2.5MM in incentives, including up to $1MM in per game roster bonuses.
Sticking with the Texans, defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr. inked a one-year pact worth a fully guaranteed $1.49MM, per Wilson. The 32-year-old, who received a $187,500 signing bonus, will play on a $1.3MM salary.
Vikings linebacker Jamal Adamssigned for the veteran minimum, Ben Goessling of the Minnesota Star Tribune reports. The ninth-year man, who made three Pro Bowls as a safety earlier in his career, will collect a $1.3MM base salary and count $1.08MM against the Vikings’ cap. Aside from a $60K signing bonus and a $50K roster bonus, the Vikings do not owe Adams any guaranteed money.
Patriots guard Michael Onwenuagreed to amend his contract in May, reducing his cap hit by $2.5MM in exchange for $10MM in guarantees and bonuses. It turns out there is also a $1MM incentive if Onwenu makes the Pro Bowl on the original ballot and another $1MM available if he earns a first- or second-team All-Pro nod, Mike Reiss of ESPN writes. Onwenu was a solid starter over his first six seasons, but he has never been a Pro Bowler or an All-Pro.
