Frank Lampard’s old Mudryk warning suddenly explains Chelsea’s big U-turn

Frank Lampard’s old Mudryk warning suddenly explains Chelsea’s big U-turn

Frank Lampard’s assessment of Mykhailo Mudryk looks particularly relevant after Chelsea decided a loan could be the best next step for the winger.

Mudryk has agreed to leave Stamford Bridge temporarily before the transfer deadline, and comments from the former Chelsea boss help explain why regular football may now matter more than another season spent fighting for minutes.

Mudryk’s situation has changed quickly since his return to the Chelsea squad this summer.

Xabi Alonso initially wanted time to assess the Ukraine international following almost two years away from competitive football. Reuters reported earlier this month that Alonso was focused first on reintegrating Mudryk into the group before making any decision over his future.

The winger subsequently featured during pre-season, but Chelsea now appear ready to take a different approach.

ReadChelsea reported on Tuesday that Mudryk has agreed to leave Chelsea on loan, with Strasbourg among the possibilities and the 25-year-old understood to prefer another Premier League club.

Chelsea have no plans to sell Mykhailo Mudryk this summer. Only a loan if he departs. Remaining with the first-team hasn't been entirely ruled out, but the priority will be to get Mudryk minutes.

Lampard worked with Mudryk during his second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge in 2023 and repeatedly saw qualities which Chelsea have struggled to unlock consistently in matches.

Football.London has revisited Lampard’s assessment of Mudryk, with the former Blues boss highlighting his exceptional speed but also the adjustment required when operating in the Premier League.

Lampard later described Mudryk as a player whose “pace is a huge strength”, while also praising his dribbling and finishing during training.

The interesting part was what followed.

Lampard pointed out that moving into the Premier League was a significant step for a young player still developing his game. The Chelsea Chronicle also recalls Lampard explaining that Mudryk regularly stayed behind after training to work on his finishing, despite that quality not always translating into competitive matches.

That distinction remains important three years later.

Mudryk’s physical talent has never really been the problem. Finding the rhythm, decision-making and consistency required to turn those attributes into Premier League production has been far more difficult.

Chelsea loan should be about development rather than an exit

That is why Chelsea’s latest decision makes sense.

A loan does not have to represent the club giving up on Mudryk. It can instead provide something he cannot be guaranteed at Stamford Bridge: regular competitive minutes.

ReadChelsea analysed the dilemma facing Alonso on Tuesday. Chelsea already have considerable competition in attacking areas, while Alonso’s system does not necessarily create an obvious starting position for a winger whose greatest strength remains attacking space from wide areas.

Mudryk therefore needs a destination where he will play rather than simply a prestigious badge.

That could make another Premier League club particularly attractive. He would continue learning the competition Lampard once identified as such a difficult adjustment while receiving the minutes Chelsea cannot currently promise him.

Strasbourg offers a different advantage through the BlueCo structure, while interest from Italy has also been reported. The determining factor should be opportunity rather than geography.

Chelsea paid an initial £62million to sign Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023, so there remains a major incentive to see whether his enormous natural ability can still be developed. Reuters confirms the original deal carried substantial additional potential value beyond that initial fee.

Lampard saw the raw ingredients years ago.

Chelsea’s summer decision suggests the priority now is finding somewhere Mudryk can finally turn them into consistent performances.
