Liverpool’s pursuit of Gilberto Mora has received another push from Mexico, with a new report placing the Reds among clubs to have approached over a possible January move.
The 17-year-old gem has been linked with Liverpool for weeks, and earlier slants said the Anfield club had already contacted Tijuana and the player’s camp.
Now Wednesday’s print edition of 24 Horas says Liverpool are among several major European sides to have made approaches over a potential winter transfer.
January move now being discussed
Gilberto Mora is also attracting Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona, as per the Mexican newspaper.
The report says those clubs have sounded out the possibility of taking the midfielder in the winter market.
Liverpool had already been credited with making contact, but the latest report now ties those approaches directly to a possible January move. Fair to say Alexis Mac Allister likes that idea.
Still there is still no statement of an agreement or formal offer.
Mexico want to protect Mora
The report also brings an interesting warning from inside Mexican football. Andrés Lillini, who oversees Mexico’s youth national teams, has called for care over Mora’s workload after the World Cup.
He explained that the midfielder is now effectively part of the senior national-team process.
“After playing a World Cup, with everything he went through physically and emotionally, we have to look after the person and not wear him down just because we want to win something,” Lillini said.
He added that any decision over Mora dropping back into youth competitions will now belong to the senior national-team setup.
That matters because Mora had already dealt with a serious physical problem before the World Cup.
24 Horas says he suffered a severe case of pubalgia, which kept him out for a large part of Tijuana’s campaign and nearly ruled him out of the tournament.
For Liverpool, that adds another consideration around a player who is attracting more and more attention.
The transfer interest is moving forward. But Mora is still 17, and those around him want his development managed carefully.
