It took until the middle of training camp, but someone finally asked New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel the question that had been hanging in the air since April.
After photos of him and former NFL reporter Dianna Russini surfaced and set off a very public storm, Vrabel said he was seeking “counseling” to work through the fallout with his family. I’m sorry. I will forever put the word “counseling” in quotes, because it definitely wasn’t a family thing. If anything, it was a meeting on how to bury the scandal.
On Tuesday, a reporter actually pressed him on what he had learned from those sessions and how he balanced that personal work with preparing for the season.
Vrabel had faced the media multiple times since the Patriots opened camp without the subject coming up. How this wasn’t the number one topic for reporters from day one is just beyond comprehension. The scandal itself had already produced weeks of headlines, additional photos, a missed day of the NFL Draft, and plenty of speculation. Yet the specific follow-up on the counseling had stayed off-limits until this press conference.
This was the first reporter who decided to muster up the courage to question him.

Vrabel, now 50, has insisted the encounters with Russini were innocent despite the mountain of evidence. He faced no league investigation, and only briefly addressed the situation, mentioning he had some “difficult conversations” with his family and the Patriots organization.
The reporter referenced Vrabel’s earlier comments about seeking “counseling” after those conversations at home and asked what he took away from the process while getting the team ready for 2026. The coach, however, deflected like a true champ.
He talked about the continual need for improvement, both individually and as a team. He stressed preparing for a season-long team voyage that would look different from last year. Then he shifted into a detailed discussion of the offensive line and combination blocks. He mentioned walking into the O-line meeting room and asking how the group could get better at sustaining the line of scrimmage together rather than relying on one-on-one blocking. The response went on at length about combined progress and areas where coaches and players alike could improve.
“I think we always look at improvement. As we talk about getting ready for the next season, we always look at improvement and ways that we can improve individually and how we can improve as a team,” he said. “It’s really critical that we continue to do that on and off the field.”
“I believe in that. I believe in everything that we can do to help this football team, to help our coaches, to help myself and everybody else included,” Vrabel added
By the end of his answer, Vrabel was discussing “the O-line” and “combination blocks.”

Much to Vrabel’s dismay, the broader context still lingers.
The photos that started the scandal showed him and Russini together at an adults-only resort. Those were followed by earlier images, including ones showing the pair kissing at a New York bar. Then there were the pictures from a boat trip in Tennessee while she was visibly pregnant.
Russini was forced out of her reporting job due to the scrutiny. But Vrabel described some of the coverage as “laughable” before later acknowledging those difficult conversations and committing to “counseling.”
His career somehow escaped unscathed.
The Patriots stood behind his decision to prioritize family. By the time training camp arrived, the story had cooled enough that it took this reporter’s deliberate question to bring it back up.
Vrabel’s handling of the moment shows he is determined not to discuss the subject. The episode changes little about the Patriots’ on-field outlook. Vrabel remains focused on improvement and preparing his roster. Yet the exchange served as a reminder that the Russini story never completely disappeared. And it’s this kind of elusiveness and avoidance that is going to ensure it lingers for a long time.
