Vinicius Junior personally contacted Arsenal after deciding to remain at Real Madrid, with fresh details revealing just how seriously the Brazilian considered a move to north London.
Arsenal made the 26-year-old one of their leading attacking targets this summer and were prepared to commit significant money to a deal if his contract talks in Spain collapsed.
Vinicius eventually accepted Real Madrid’s improved proposal, ending Mikel Arteta’s hopes of bringing one of world football’s biggest attacking names to the Emirates.
However, contact between the player and Arsenal did not end when that agreement was reached.

The London Standard reports, citing The Athletic, that Vinicius personally reached out to Arsenal afterwards to explain why he had chosen to stay in Madrid.
Arsenal had remained optimistic until the final stages of his contract negotiations, having held positive conversations with Vinicius and his representatives.
Arteta, sporting director Andrea Berta and the Arsenal ownership had outlined a project in which the Brazil international would become a central figure.
Vinicius was reportedly attracted by that vision and was genuinely open to moving to London before Madrid improved their financial offer. He ultimately thanked Arsenal for their efforts before explaining his decision to remain with a club for whom he has considerable affection.
It provides important context after what initially appeared to be a straightforward transfer failure.
ReadArsenal reported last week that Arsenal’s attention could now turn towards Bradley Barcola, with Liverpool potentially stepping away from negotiations for the Paris Saint-Germain winger.
Vinicius will not be arriving at the Emirates this summer, but the fact he remained engaged with Arsenal until Madrid finally secured his future indicates how ambitious Arteta and Berta were prepared to be.
Their challenge now is finding another attacker capable of providing a similar impact.
