Arsenal could pocket£4.3m as Lazio put Nuno Tavares up for sale

Nuno Tavares Arsenal transfer business could unexpectedly hand Mikel Arteta’s side another sizeable windfall after Lazio reportedly put the former Gunners defender up for sale.

Tavares permanently left Arsenal for Lazio last summer after spending the previous campaign on loan in Serie A.

His move brought Arsenal around £6million to £7million, but the Gunners also protected themselves by inserting a sell-on clause into the agreement.

That clause could now become particularly valuable.

🚨 Nuno Tavares could leave Lazio this summer.

The Portuguese left-back is no longer considered central to Lazio’s plans, with the club demanding at least €15m for his departure.

Arsenal would receive 40% of the transfer fee.

Nuno Tavares Arsenal clause could deliver £4.3m

According to Football Italia, Lazio are prepared to sell Tavares and have placed a €20million asking price on the Portugal international.

Previous approaches from Porto and Besiktas did not develop into transfers, but Lazio are continuing to look for a buyer before the window closes.

Arsenal will be watching closely.

The London Standard previously reported that the deal taking Tavares permanently to Lazio included a sell-on clause believed to be worth up to 25 per cent.

If Lazio received around €20million, roughly £17million, Arsenal could therefore be entitled to a payment worth as much as £4.3million, depending on the exact terms of the clause and final transfer fee.

It comes on the same day that Arsenal could also benefit from another former player moving clubs.

ReadArsenal reported that Tottenham’s interest in Folarin Balogun could potentially hand the Gunners close to £9million because Arsenal retained a 17.5 per cent sell-on clause when the striker joined Monaco.

Neither payment is guaranteed, but together they underline the value of Arsenal protecting themselves when moving fringe players on.

Tavares made 28 appearances for Arsenal after joining from Benfica in 2021 before loan spells eventually took him away from north London.

A permanent departure from Lazio could now provide Arsenal with another useful injection of transfer funds without Arteta having to lose anyone from his current squad.
