Former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has received backlash on social media for his behaviour during an exchange with Real Madrid fans.

Alexander-Arnold, 27, who left the Reds to join Real for £10million last summer, endured a difficult debut season at the Santiago Bernabeu. Indeed, the England international struggled with a number of injury concerns, was unable to hit top form when fit and found himself battling alongside Dani Carvajal for the right-back slot.

When Carvajal confirmed he would leave Real at the end of the 2025/26 season, it felt as though Alexander-Arnold would then be the club's outright No.1 right-back going forward. But Real have since dipped into the transfer market and decided to sign Dumfries, who is a right-sided defender, in a £17million deal from Inter Milan.

While it's not guaranteed that Dumfries is going to be first-choice instead of Alexander-Arnold, the ex-Liverpool man is set to face another tough battle to secure a regular starting spot.

Now, Alexander-Arnold has entered the spotlight off the pitch for his behaviour to a supporter outside the club's training ground on Tuesday. He was captured taking pictures with Real fans from his car - and even signed a shirt.

Although that is seen as a normal gesture, fans criticised Alexander-Arnold for not smiling. Footage showed the Real full-back looking a little downbeat as he sat in the car greeting supporters.

"Ballon d'Or winner Trent Alexander Arnold looks miserable there. The grass isn't always greener fella," one said on X.

"The fact he can’t even smile for the kids is f****** terrible," a second wrote.

"This actually makes me sad to see. Was always happier signing for fans at Anfield," another added.

"Trent Alexander-Arnold doesn't look happy at all while signing the Real Madrid jersey," a fourth said.

"Could at least smile for the pictures for the kids," a fifth commented.

There were some positive comments regarding Alexander-Arnold's interaction with the fan, defending him.

A fan said: "Y'all take a chill pill. You don’t expect someone to be jolly all the time. You don't know what kind of day he's having at that time. He still manages to do all that for the kids."

"He's fine; he's just introvert," another wrote.

A third put: "Not enjoying being disturbed every 2 minutes doesn't mean he hates the club.... ridiculous comment."

Real are next action when they face Deportivo de A Coruna in their penultimate pre-season fixture on Wednesday. They then face Bundesliga side Schalke on Sunday.
