Curtis Jones hands fitness boost to Liverpool after missing AS Monaco friendly

Curtis Jones was surprisingly omitted from the matchday squad to face AS Monaco at Anfield, leaving Liverpool supporters searching for answers on Sunday.

The academy graduate, who has been heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan, was left out as a precaution after flagging a minor fitness concern in training. The issue was not believed to be serious.

Jones has played a key role during Liverpool’s pre-season preparations under new head coach Andoni Iraola, featuring prominently during the club’s tour of the United States.

His absence naturally raised questions given the midfielder’s uncertain future at Anfield. Jones is entering the final year of his contract, while Inter have reportedly made two offers for his services, both of which were rejected by Liverpool.

Despite the transfer speculation, Liverpool are understood to value Curtis Jones and could still look to extend his contract. The England international took part in Liverpool’s training session on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Jacquet has returned to training ahead of a potential appearance this weekend, while new signing Ronald Araujo has completed his first session with his new teammates following his loan move from Barcelona.

Alexis Mac Allister and Victor Munoz have also returned to action as Liverpool prepare to conclude their pre-season schedule with a double-header friendly against Como on Sunday.

Andoni Iraola has inherited a squad still dealing with several injuries and long-term absences, making it more difficult for him to implement his new style of play.

Liverpool are currently without Hugo Ekitike and Conor Bradley, both of whom are expected to remain sidelined for some time.

The defensive unit has also been stretched by Jacquet’s absence, with the summer signing yet to feature in pre-season, while Joe Gomez has recently picked up an injury. Giovanni Leoni’s continued recovery has further limited Iraola’s options at the back.
