It has been a summer of change for Newcastle United, with Matthias Jaissle replacing Eddie Howe as head coach, while key players including Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have departed in big-money transfers.
Newcastle have made five signings, bringing in Sean Steur, Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Ewen Jaouen and Lukas Hornicek.

The Magpies have played four pre-season matches, beating Darlington 3-0, drawing 1-1 with Gateshead and losing 4-1 to Bristol City before securing a 2-1 victory over Valencia on Saturday.
They now face Everton at Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on Wednesday. They will then take on Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg.
Newcastle will begin their 2026-27 Premier League campaign at home to Liverpool on August 23 before travelling to Tottenham Hotspur.
As Jaissle continues to assess his squad, there are several changes to the starting XI that faced Valencia. Joelinton returns and takes over the captaincy from Malick Thiaw, while Lewis Hall also comes into the side to face Everton.
Yoane Wissa keeps his place after scoring twice against Valencia, while Anthony Elanga starts despite being stretchered off in the previous game.
Elanga was caught high on his right leg by Valencia captain Jose Gaya during the first half. Gaya was shown a straight red card, sparking a heated confrontation between the two sets of players.
Speaking after the game, Jaissle said Elanga appeared to have avoided a serious injury and could return next week after an encouraging initial assessment.
“The only thing I can say is that it seems to be not bad, and we hope it’s true that Anthony can start again next week,” Jaissle said.
“Of course I was in fear, definitely. But now I am more relaxed because the medical department is showing a green light for it,” Jaissle added. “It was a really tough (challenge), it was not expected. Fouls are part of the game — that was really harsh.”
