Jeremy Jacquet provides injury boost for Liverpool ahead of Como clash

Jeremy Jacquet’s time on Merseyside has been anything but straightforward since he agreed to join Liverpool.

The centre-back completed his move from Stade Rennais in February, with the transfer worth up to £60 million made up of a £55 million fixed fee and £5 million in add-ons.

He was due to see out the rest of the 2025-26 season in Ligue 1 before making the switch to Anfield permanent.

Days after the deal was struck, Jacquet suffered a serious shoulder injury during Rennes’ 3-1 defeat at Lens. Rennes head coach Habib Beye described the issue as serious enough to require surgery, effectively ending the defender’s season in France before it could resume.

Jeremy Jacquet officially became a Liverpool player this summer once his move was completed. He arrived at Anfield as a 20-year-old with 37 appearances in Ligue 1 across three campaigns, and has represented France up to U21 level.

Now, Liverpool have posted Jacquet in full team training for the first time.

The images mark the clearest sign yet that the defender has recovered from the shoulder problem that disrupted his move to the club.

His involvement comes just days before Liverpool’s final pre-season fixtures against Como.

Liverpool host the Serie A side twice on August 16, with a behind-closed-doors match at midday followed by a fixture in front of supporters at 6pm.

It is the third summer in a row that the club has arranged a same-day double-header, having previously done so against Athletic Bilbao and, before that, Sevilla and Las Palmas.

Jacquet’s emergence in training gives Andoni Iraola another defensive option to assess before the fixture. Liverpool have been short of centre-back options through pre-season, with question marks over the fitness of other squad members throughout the summer.

Iraola confirmed on Monday that Jacquet is in contention to face Como this weekend.

The 21-year-old signed a five-year contract at Anfield, running until 2031 with the option of an additional year.

Liverpool fought off competition from Chelsea to complete the deal, having identified Jeremy Jacquet as part of their strategy of recruiting elite young talent.

With the Premier League season opener against Newcastle United now less than two weeks away, every training session carries added significance. Jacquet’s return to full team training gives Iraola a timely boost as he finalises his squad for the campaign ahead.
