Chelsea demand £50m to sell Liam Delap after disappointing season

Chelsea want more than £50million to sell Liam Delap this summer, strengthening their negotiating position after Everton dropped out of the race for the striker.

ReadChelsea exclusively revealed on Tuesday that Everton were no longer pursuing Delap because they could not afford Chelsea’s asking price.

A clearer figure has now emerged.

According to The Athletic, as reported by the London Standard, Chelsea will not sanction Delap’s departure for less than £50million.

The Blues paid £30million to sign the England striker from Ipswich Town last summer, so a deal at their current valuation would secure a significant profit.

Delap’s future has become one of Chelsea’s key decisions before the transfer window closes.

Xabi Alonso has considerable attacking depth following another busy summer of recruitment, but Chelsea are not prepared to accept a cut-price deal for the 23-year-old.

The £50m-plus valuation also helps explain why Everton have stepped away despite previous interest from David Moyes.

ReadChelsea looked at the dilemma facing Chelsea after Everton’s withdrawal, with Delap understood to have been prepared to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea can therefore afford to remain patient.

There is still time for another Premier League club to make a serious approach, but any interested side now has a clear indication of the level required to tempt Chelsea into a permanent sale.

Delap’s long-term contract also gives the Blues little reason to lower their demands simply to complete a deal before the deadline.
