Arsenal were challenged to a tricky bout once again during pre-season as Como held them to a 1-1 draw. The Gunners were by far the better side but couldn't convert that into goals.
Gabriel Jesus hit the post early on after Eberechi Eze pounced on a mistake to give him a near-certain goal, but he couldn’t hit the target. Arsenal did take the lead, though, following a mistake at the back as a poor clearance was intercepted by Myles Lewis-Skelly who made no mistake, but it was his celebration which sent a clear message to where his heart is at.
Martin Baturina drew Como level after a brilliant piece of skill to beat Theo Julienne and Max Dowman before slamming in the equaliser. Arsenal dominated the second half with Como barely having a sniff but chance after chance came and went without the goal being tested.
David Raya saved two penalties in the shootout while Noni Madueke missed his, hitting the post. The Gunners win but not in normal time.

Here is how football.london rated the player performances:
Kepa Arrizabalaga – Could do very little about the goal, and did make a good save in the first half, a low show to his left. 6
Theo Julienne – A great opportunity for the youngster to play more than a half of football at senior level. Yes he was beaten easy by some great skill for the Como goal, but he did not look out of place at all. 5
Marli Salmon – A very mature and impressive performance from the young defender. Strong, composed and smart in his play, especially when under pressure in possession. 8
Gabriel – Took a bit of a whack and came off at half-time ahead of the Community Shield. A couple nice defensive actions and interceptions. 6
Piero Hincapie – Solid performance from the Ecuadorian, not really tested down the Arsenal left. 6
Myles Lewis-Skelly – In a 48 hour period where it was learned both Chelsea and Manchester United had been approached about signing the 19-year-old, this goal was a big moment and a chance to send a message. He did, too, with his celebration making his feelings clear his heart is with Arsenal.
His performance beyond the opportunistic and well-finished goal was also very good too, his best of the summer. 8
Eberechi Eze – Looked really sharp considering he’d only just come back into the fold. Nice touches and passes bode well for the attacking midfielder. 7
Ethan Nwaneri – The best we’ve seen him this summer, the 18-year-old looked sharp and dangerous, creating several chances, a couple with some nice back-heels. 7
Max Dowman – Always a threat as usual, darting inside, might need to release the ball a little sooner than he would prefer. 6
Gabriel Jesus – The first big chance of the game came to the Brazilian after a mistake at the back by Como, with a near-open goal to aim at, he managed to hit the post. Was only given a poor 31 minutes before being taken off. 4
Gabriel Martinelli – He lacked threat in his performance, with the backdrop of a reported bid from Galatasaray too. 5
Substitutes:
Viktor Gyokeres – Was bullish in the attack, getting the through passes he can thrive on but couldn’t covert the possession into a clear-cut chance. 6
Fabio Vieira – Had to score the one-on-one chance set up by Martin Odegaard. 4
Martin Odegaard – Immediately found the defence-splitting passes, one of which should have been put away by Fabio Vieira. 7
Cristhian Mosquera – Still does not look assured amid talk Arsenal appear to be going back in for Ezri Konsa. 5
Bruno Guimaraes – Plenty of appreciation for the debutant, with a couple strong challenges and nice passes. Made a great interception at the end too. 7
David Raya – The defence looked more confident just with him there. Was alert to some loose balls he needed to deal with and made a strong save down low from a Caballo shot and late on repeated the feet with an even better stop. He also made two saves in the shootout. 8
Riccardo Calafiori – Some strong defensive work with some aerial balls. As usual was pushing very high up the field to be involved in the build-up. 5
Ben White – Not as good as in previous games, getting turned a couple of times, but likely to start still on Sunday. 5
Kai Havertz – Chance on the turn outside the box, but dragged his shot wide of the Como goal. 5
Mikel Merino – Came on to play midfield and definitely could do with some more minutes to gain sharpness. 5
Christos Tzolis – It seems Arsenal have another set-piece king because the deliveries from the Greek were excellent. 6
Josh Ogunnaike – Came on too late to rate. n/a
