Five Observations from Wednesday's Practice | Chiefs Training Camp 8/12

**2\. The Chiefs wrapped up a stretch of eight padded practices in 10 days.**

Kansas City completed a grueling stretch on Wednesday that included eight padded practices in 10 days.

For context, due to league rules, the Chiefs hadn't taken the field for a padded practice prior to this stretch since last season ended. Once the "ramp up" portion of camp was over, however, Head Coach Andy Reid didn't waste any time maximizing the Chiefs' time in St. Joseph.

"You need to have these days," said tight end Travis Kelce. "You need to have this time of grinding with the guys and being around \[each other\] all day, every day. \[This is where\] you start to create that chemistry and that standard of how we're going to do things."

Wednesday's practice featured a 9-on-7 segment, a 7-on-7 portion and multiple 11-on-11 periods, the latter of which included another "long drive drill" segment. The drill, which simulates the play-to-play nature of an actual game, challenged the first-teamers on each side of the ball with 12 consecutive plays without a break.

A hallmark of Coach Reid's training camps, this marked the fourth practice in a row with a "long drive drill" segment.

**3\. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with wide receiver Tyquan Thornton for a deep completion on the first snap of 11-on-11 drills.**

Mahomes zipped a beautiful deep ball into the arms of Thornton on the very first play of 11-on-11 drills on Wednesday morning, continuing what has been a strong connection throughout camp so far.

Notably, Thornton was a standout just a few days ago with multiple catches during Monday's practice before logging another impressive performance on Wednesday.

The veteran receiver earned a roster spot (and ultimately another contract) following a memorable training camp in 2025, and now an established member of the Chiefs' receiving corps, Thornton – at least so far – looks primed to take another step forward in his development this season.

Elsewhere on offense, wide receivers Jeff Caldwell and Jalen Royals each notched a leaping, physical catch during Wednesday's 11-on-11 work.
